Whose Dough Is It Anyway

April 30, 2007 @ 09:16

Today is tax deadline day and this day always reminds of how bizarre our system is.

This is one of those years when I actually got a refund. So did my wife and my son, but my daughter had to pay 13 bucks.

Like everyone else, when my tax guy told me I was getting a refund I got that feeling of exhilaration like I had won a raffle or some modest jackpot and that's why our system is so stupid.

This isn't found money or extra money or any other kind of a windfall. It was my money that the government had control of up until about two weeks ago. I just got back what was mine in the first place.

Lucky for me I'm not in a situation where that money was make or break for me, but there are lots of people who could really use the money the government holds on to for most of the year.

My son is a great example. He was lucky enough to get a great summer job last year that paid him over 20 dollars an hour. But it was only for a couple of months so the final total wasn't that excessive when you consider what it costs to go to school.

Problem is, because he made such a large hourly wage he was taxed to the hilt, so from the beginning of September to the middle of April the government held on to a couple of thousand dollars he could have put to great use during the school year.

He got back every penny he paid in tax, but he had to go several months without it while the government used it.

Needless to say the money has come in handy because it was like a forced savings plan, but that's not the point.

The point is, the savings plan paid no interest and making deposits wasn't an option.

Certainly there's got to be a better way.

Hi Freddie,

I don't know the details of it, but in situations like your son's, I am pretty sure it is possible to have the employer not with hold taxes and make the payments yourself, then you can control (to a degree) how much is paid and when. This is especially useful for seasonal workers.

Pete is right you just ask your employer for I believe a T2200 instead of a T4 they still take all your CPP UI
but not income tax

Isn't the T2200 for expenses the employer won't pay? I think the T-1A is for deductions from income.

It can be done, I've done it several times. Just tell accounting when you do the paperwork initially and they will give you the right forms.

Freddie, What I cant stand is when the government taxes you on overtime or on work you do that is over and beyond the full time job you already have. I work full time as a therapist. I also coach swimming four days a week, in the end it brings me about 3-4 thousand extra dollars a year. I do not get taxed on it until the end of the year it is put on what we have here as a 1099. The feds and state tax the hell out of it. There was a time when I coached because I needed that extra income. It actually helped pay my bills. I bust my ass for that extra 3-4 grand and in the end I get killed on it. I think there ought to be some law or something that says that the Government can only tax you on the first 40 hours you work. Anything over and beyond that you have worked for because you needed it and wanted to sock a little more away. Instead overtime is penalized over here in the states. I think overtime or anything extra should be tax free not taxed more.

Well this is kind of off-topic, but I did my taxes over the weekend, and I was shocked to discover that I owed $600 additional as an OHIP premium - that's on top of what the government already takes for health care. Free health care indeed!
