Global Swarming

April 28, 2007 @ 09:10

On the subject of global warming, the above e-mail displays some of the hysteria that's taking place recently and that's why I call it Global Swarming.

From my perspective there are two distinct issues. There's global warming, and there's Kyoto. Actually, I'll define it even more. There's global warming, global warming hysteria, and Kyoto.

Just because you're against Kyoto doesn't mean you deny global warming because they are two separate issues. It reminds me of the gay marriage issue, anyone who was against same sex marriage was considered anti-gay or homophobic and it just wasn't fair.

Just because someone preferred to keep the traditional definition of marriage didn't mean they were against homosexuality. Problem is, it gave those in favour of same-sex marriage a powerful tool in their argument.

Same with global warming, I don't deny global warming exists to some degree, I just don't think Kyoto is the way to attack it, and I definitely don't think we've got the problem that a lot of people claim we do. But it seems you're not allow to take this position and if you do, you're anti-earth.

Let's not forget the global warming issue was kick-started by a movie - An Inconvenient Truth - a compelling movie but a movie just the same.

Al Gore got the world revved up about global warming with a movie that many people, (of all the nerve) have questioned the accuracy. It's believed Al Gore may have massaged a few facts to make a more interesting movie and the result is what is going on right now.

Hysteria.

Much the way people got freaked out by birds after the movie "The Birds", or how people were afraid to go in the water after "Jaws". I'm sure there are more contemporary examples but I can't think of them right now.

Wait a minute. Yes I can. A guy named Argie mentioned it yesterday in a posting called "Sensible". He compared the global warming to Y2K. Remember how we were all led down the garden path with that pile of bullshit? The need for some minor adjustments turned into the prediction of Armageddon at the stroke of midnight on January 1st, 2000.

There's no doubt global warming is an issue. Given what we've done, and are doing to the planet it's got to be an issue. But to what extent and for what reasons?

Is it so horrible to stop down and ask a few questions and throw your support behind more moderate views?

Those who've drunk the Kool-Aid and blindly follow the movie makers and highly paid lecturers like David Suzuki like to label skeptics as "deniers", and they like to accuse big business of clouding the issue for monetary reasons.

Well if any of those people don't think there's some big dough being made off the hysteria right now, I feel sorry for them.

Meanwhile, I realize there are a lot people out there who look down their nose at the Toronto Sun and consider it not worthy of reference material, but I really think you should take the time to read today's editorial.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Comparing Y2K to Climate Change?
Let's deny the link between cancer and tobacco (oops...how many needless deaths with that belief)
Your right Feddie, Kyoto is flawed, and not the answer...my issue with it is credits! How fucked is that.
But when Canada stood tall and backed Kyoto I was very proud, kindered to our stand in various world disputes.
Unfortunately, now I feel like the shit sweeper behind the big American elephant.

Kyoto may be flawed. I am not a big fan of it. What I don't understand is why so many people don't believe in Global Warming. Whenever someone argues against it they don't use scientific fact or researched and confirmed data. It is just simply, "I don't think it is accurate." People are saying An Inconvenient Truth fudge some facts but don't say what they are or what the real facts are, they just plant doubt. The movie wasn't made by Michael Moore.

I know we can't shut down industry like Suzuki wants. Really Suzuki would never be happy with any solution introduced by the government. Even if they said "Yes" to Kyoto he would then want changes to that. But we do need to listen to the real experts without the agendas and do something. Arguing over the accuracy of Global Warming isn't much of a help unless someone brings in concrete proof that Global Warming is full of shit.

Look at it this way - one of the main reasons why it's so front and centre now is because there's an election coming in the U.S., and if you believe the squawking of the liberals, there's an election coming here in Canada soon too. It will all go away soon enough and hopefully only the moderates will have had any influence.

April 28, 2007 / 13:14

Andrew, you nailed it! Now, all we have to do is find the experts who don't have agendas...
I believe Global Warming is very real and I am worried, however, I am going to cast doubt on rich celebrities like Sheryl Crowe who tell me how much toilet paper I should be using, and I refuse to pay heed to anyone who uses it as a political football, whether Conservative or Liberal. Talk to me when these guys start biking to Parliament every day instead of riding in air-conditioned, gas-guzzling limos.

...Some of the same ones telling us to conserve and this and that are not conserving much themselves. However, we can not react in a negative way. Conserving can only help our pocket books. Solutions to Global warming outlined in Kyoto I think are flawed in that there are no set limits. And the limits that are in it are vague and allow fudging of numbers. I think the solutions are very basic. We as individuals need to make the necessary changes in our lifestyles. They dont even have to be drastic changes. MY wife and I switched all our lightbulbs to the new highly efficient ones being marketed. We did that in January, our electric bill went down by $5-7 a month. Not bad. I have been a stickler about getting oil changes and changing air filters/keeping tires inflated in my car. I have been tracking my mileage and it has gone up by about 40 miles per tank. doesnt sound like a lot but I was getting 280 miles per tank before, now I get 320 and so every 8 months I save $30 or so. Ive gotten to the point where maintaining my car is automatic now. We also do the simple things, if we are not in a room we turn off the lights, we use cold water only to wash our clothes. I bought a new thermostat and without adjusting a thing in terms of when the heat goes on or off...and what temp it is set at, our heat bill went down $50 a month. Its all conserving. I drive a corolla, its good on gas and maintained its even better. Once im done with it I plan on driving even better car...I am saving for a Toyota Prius. That is the biggest decision but by the time I save up for that my car will be 8 years old and ready for a heap. Is simple. WE do know for sure that oil and other fossil fuels wont be around forever, that are not a renewable source so no matter what large scale government treaty says, it pays to conserve energy and become more efficient on an individual basis. I laugh when I see someone driving a hummer pull up to fill up at a gas station now because they pay 80-100 dollars to fill up...Me in my corolla, 28-30. whether or not you believe in global warming or you believe the treaty is a good one there are reasons to conserve and to not treat the planet with such reckless abandon and if we all scaled back our energy use, just a little, we could all make a huge difference.

Freddie,

First and foremost, pretty sure it's a documentary, not a movie. Huge difference. Doesn't make it is true, but certainly sets the stage.

Second, quoting anything that Argie says is reaching. Come on, comparing Y2K and Global Warming? Y2K, my friend was real, however, you need to understand real. Real is that most computer systems would have had a problem with the turn over to 01/01/00. Of course, planes are not going to drop from the sky, people's bank accounts were not suddenly going to over inflate, or under inflate. All of that was media bullcrap. Invented and extracted for the benefit of selling a magazine, newspaper, advertisement or getting someone to watch or listen to them and not the competition.

Did anything happen as a result of Y2K, hell ya. Lots of computer programs don't work well, some of them tell the wrong time, but these are all easily fixed. Set the time to the proper time, upgrade the software to a new release, replace hardware or just live with it. Why was it such a non-issue? Because thousands of people around the world fixed the important and critical things in time, or maybe a little late. My company is in IT and we started in 1999, everything we had was Y2K compliant out of the box with the exception of some software that was patched or replaced as it became available. This probably happened more often than the media wanted to report, because its boooring.

Back to global warming etc...

Mike, I applaud you, I really do. Now for the part that is going to sting a little. It doesn't matter. You see, you save $30 on gas or $50 on heating and the world is not fixed. It won't be fixed if every single household in the developed nations did exactly what you are doing. Would I ask you or tell you to stop, or criticize you for doing it? Hell no.

It won't work because these savings are not even the tip of the iceberg, they are the little piece of ice that falls off the tip. (due to global warming?) You see, the politicos all want us to believe that we are the problem, the constituents, not them, not their CxO buddies, not the 5% of the wealthiest people in the world, because that would cause them to lose money. If it were known that all of the things that they do to make money was what was actually causing all of these problems, well, that would suck, For them.

Don't get me wrong, I want to be rich too, I want to be able to afford anything that I "need", I have nothing against being rich. It's the attitude towards the way in which a group of the rich get and stay rich that bothers me.

Example: I go to Costco to buy a roll of 100 postage stamps. I have to pick up an 18"x8" plastic package with a picture of a roll of stamps on it to take to the cash register and pay for the stamps. Then someone goes to the little room and brings me the actual stamps. Yes, they take that behemoth of a hunk of plastic and put it back on the shelf, effectively "recycling" it, but why bother making it to start with? The energy used to build the manufacturing facility, the materials, the cast offs, the energy to ship it, to eventually "throw it out" or recycle it, if it's recyclable in you area, etc... all to buy a roll of stamps at 10% off the Post Office price!

There are countless other examples at Costco and all other big box retailers. All of them claim that "we" want it this way. Well, I don't, I bet a lot of other people don't either. But, hey, who the hell do you call and complain to?

To Kyoto. Back to my start, I wouldn't condemn Mike for doing things that won't save the planet and I wouldn't condemn any country that said "Yes, let's try." Seriously, it's better than nothing. And that is exactly what Canada as a nation has done. Nothing. Al Gore, a respected leader (maybe you don't respect him but lots of people do) says he looks to Canada as a leader in the environment. Lots of other world leaders and regular Joe's, Mohammed's, and Ping's do too. We elected all of these poor excuses for politician's, we are as responsible as they are. Fiberal, CONservative, or otherwise, I am not picking one that is good or bad. They have all let us down.

So let's forget debating global warming and just do something, anything. To twist Freddie's words: "Let's be doing something."

God on ya Mike, I have a Ford Escape Hybrid, I get the size of vehicle that I want and use as little fuel as possible. I buy electronic devices that actually turn off or if they don't I unplug them. Did you know my friggin' toaster draws power when it's not in use? Not any more, we unplug the damn thing when we are done now. I used to tease my Dad when his VCR was flashing 12:00 after a power failure, now mine does that whenever I use it as I only plug it in when I need it. If I want to record something, I have a PVR which uses a battery to keep track of the time and turn on the unit when something is timed to start. These are the things industry needs to do to make a difference. Quit wasteful manufacturing and start putting quality before profit and things will be better. Too much waste. I better stop, I could go on forever.

Pete

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
