I realize the Native situation is a difficult one. Unlike some groups that immigrate here and demand things like employment equity, Natives were here first; we took their land over, so they're kind of our responsibility (whereas I don't think people like the above-mentioned Richard Steele are). However, I don't think our current approach to Natives (automatic welfare, a separate Ministry, etcetera) is in the end really any more beneficial than, say, residential schools. A better one might be something like former Ontario Premier Mike Harris' welfare to work program, which would allow them and their families to gain true dignity and end their dependency on big government.
Anyhow, just my view.
