Intolerant

April 27, 2007 @ 09:26

News Item

NEW DELHI -- A court issued arrest warrants for actor Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty yesterday, saying their kiss at a public function "transgressed all limits of vulgarity." (more)

They seem to be extremely intolerant in India. Don't they realize that kissing in a woman in public is an acceptable part of North American culture?

I thought when people practiced their own culture in other countries, it was the job of the host country to understand that culture and bend over backwards to accomodate it.

That's what I've always been told.

What a ridiculous story. I suppose it's OK to force a young girl to marry some distant uncle/cousin who's 20 years older than her but if you give a girl a kiss on the cheek it's blasphemy. Nice culture and a nice country. I'll remember to scratch India off mt list of countries I wish to visit. Actually it never was on my list.

Ha Good one Fred. Remember changeing your culture to suit others only applies to Canada. We are racist if we don't bend over backwards to accomodate other cultures. Other cultures are just asserting their god given rights if they are not accomdating of us.

I.m sorry but I see a different side to it......he
does a lot of wonderful work
but who does he think he is
(no matter what country he is
in) that he could bend a girl
over backwards and plaster a
probably unwanted kiss on her.
Come on, Richard comes off
as a creep.......if he did
it to one my granddaughters I
would kick the shit out of him
and I am nearly 80 ...if you
watch the tape she is so
startled.

sorry Fred
loving you

This is right up there with Elizabeth Hurley allegedly mocking Hindu customs in her wedding.

It makes me think WE should get tough on those who offend us. Let's start with those for whom horking and spitting is a way of life...

Wow Fred, Junie sure is fiesty!!!

But I'm gonna disagree with the old girl. It comes down to this: it's just another way to accuse white North Americans of racism...No matter what you think of Gere, he doesn't deserve this cr*p....

If the Indian police want to arrest Gere for making bad movies, fine. For kissing a babe on the cheek, absolutely not.

The media in the West is spreading misinformation - " India sues Gere". It's a small town judge in a very large country. They are not reporting how this Judge has been slammed by the legal community in India. Nothing's gonna happen to Gere. Such ridiculous cases are brought to courts daily in India. It's a free and diverse country. Chill guys. In a country of about a billion people and hundreds of towns and cities a few dozen rascals go out burning effigies on the streets of no more than four towns and the Guardian screams ' The Kiss that Shocked India ' or Jon Stewart on the Daily Show in USA- " Protests Rock India ". Indians including Shilpa Shetty ( the actress in question ) didn't care much about it. And please stop asking people to respect our 'conservative' culture. We ain't no Saudi Arabia. We gave the world the Kamasutra, the sculptures of Khajuraho, the raunchy Bollywood movies and the annual Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar ( scantier clothed models than those in Victoria's Secret's calendar )

Oh and the ignorance of idiots like Argie is what gives America a lousy reputation. No one here marries their daughter or sister to their Uncles. Though I did hear jokes of such liasons happening in some state called West Virginia.

Can't kiss a woman on the cheek, but you can sure splash acid on their face if she doesn't want to marry you...Not all of them do that, of course!

Argie is big idiot and has very narrow mind. Don't you see how he bend her and keep kissing like crazy and drunk?
One or two kisses were okay but keep kissing and then bending is sick.
Don't judge all India with this.
Love you Fred and I want to take you india to show real fun part and some sexy babes ;-)

I've come in late to this conversation and have little to add other than the fact I'm sick of watching South Asian women holding cans of beans out to their stern husbands at Fortinos hoping they'll agree with the purchase. Do South Asian women have any autonomy? Or does hubby have to pre-approved every purchase at the Bramalea City Centre?

If it's your culture, cool. Just shut up when a country you've adopted thinks it's completely stupid and unacceptable within our borders.

Just like the selective abortions that are putting an abnormal amount of boys into Peel elementary schools.

We don't hate India. But we don't accept arranged marriage, a dowery or women killing themselves and their children in cheap hotel rooms on Highway 7 because they wanted to leave their abusive husbands and the community shunned them. Not much to ask.

for Apu's brother Sanjay

Your are idiot, these abnormal type of boys are running your IT world. One abnormal boy also created hotmail, world's largest mails system....list is longer than your aproach...
Do you know who is your father... okay..you can guess..

WeRNotThisStupid:

Actually you are this stupid! The practice of arranged marriages is still prevalent in India. It's also prevalent among east Indians living in North America.

Anoop

Why this arranged marriage bother you?
Normally parents narrow down big poll and then ask boy or girl. Arranged marraige
does NOT mean forced marriage, any more.

Sanjay at customer service

Arranged marriage doesn't mean forced marriage anymore?

How nice. Go celebrate your breakthrough at a sweets shop, sell some speakers out of the back of your minivan and hug.

You've achieved modern times. Now get working on the caste system and get back to me, wanna-put-my-grandma's-ashes-in-a-freaking-public-river-boy.
