Freddie... I couldn't AGREE with you more. While I didn't watch game2 I did watch a bit of game 1. And while I HATE basketball, I might just watch this series because of the FANTASTIC Toronto basketball fans that filled the ACC and cheered their asses off. I haven't heard noise like that since the 1993 Stanley Cup playoffs at Maple Leafs Gardens. Those fans nearly blew the roof of the place.
The big problem with the AAC and hockey are the platinum seats. They take up most of the lower bowl and they are filled by the suits that are there to enjoy their expensive meals, luxury boxes and shooting the shit about everything other than hockey. And it's down right EMBARRASSING to see the platinum's EMPTY during the puck drop at the start of the second and third periods. What MLSE has to do is move those fuckers to the upper deck and bring the REAL fans down to the lower bowl. Let those rich bastards talk about stock options and company mergers in the purples while the real fans watch the game and stay in their seats from opening puck drop to the announcement of the three stars. Hell… go one step further. Kick out the suits completely. Anyone wearing a SUIT to a hockey game shouldn't be allowed in the building.
Anyway, bravo to the Raptors fans for showing the Leafs fans and management what a playoff atmosphere is all about.
April 25, 2007 / 12:18
Erik, Freddie,
Your both off your rocker on this one. About 55% of the "fans" in the seats at a Raptors game this year are bandwagoners. Look at tickets sales for the past 5 years, or even from their inception, when they do well, the tickets start to sell. Next year if they don't do so well, ticket sales will drop again. Guaranteed.
Kick the suits out of a Leaf game? Get a grip, if you want more so called "fans" in the lower bowl at the ACC for a Leaf game, tell MLSE to drop the price of tickets. You'll have about as much success in that as getting them to ban suits. I was at a game in Sept 2006, gold's and the face value of the ticket is $171.60, the average Dad ain't taking Johnny to a Leaf game and sittin' in the Gold section. I think, I could be wrong, but I think Platinums are around $220 - $240 per seat, face value.
Besides all of that, have you been to a Leaf game at the ACC? I see lot's of rabid fans in the lower bowl, fewer are in the section behind the benches and a significant amount of them are MLSE, Player invites, wives and family. Who the hell says you can't dress up for a game? Seen any footage of a game from the 40's, 50's or 60's, all suits, people took pride in what they wear.
If your beef is that there are empty seats at the opening faceoffs, complain to MLSE that there aren't enough washrooms, then get the ushers to allow people to go to their seat while the play is on. What's the big deal? You can get up and leave your seat during play, why keep people in the hallways that want to get back to their seat?
Lastly, take a look at the seats 5 minutes in, pretty much full, from Sept to April/June, depending on success ;-) Name 6 US cites that can do that 2 season's in a row, yet alone 75 or more...
Sounds like you guys need to attend a game, maybe the excitement level isn't as high as a Raptors playoff game when the Leafs play say, St. Louis, but if the play is exciting, so is the crowd. I have fallen asleep at an Orlando vs Atlanta non-playoff NBA game. At least Leaf fans out number their opponents fans at a home game!

April 25, 2007 / 14:39
Pete - I'll take bandwagon jumpers who are going to make noise over suits who are enjoying their Prime Rib in their private box under the lower during the game. I want noise and people in attendance that are going to watch the game. I mean, I've been in the platinum's and have had the Prime Rib and all the cool shit that comes with a Platinum Box… but I tell ya… I was at the game and hour and a half before face off, with my Leafs jersey on and made bloody well sure that I was going to be IN MY SEAT for all of the action. Sure, during intermission, I would go back to the box grab a drink, take piss, etc but I would make sure I was back in my seat before puck drop. And it was weird, I tell ya, because I felt like I was the only one out there for the first 5-7 minutes of the second and third period… and it was Goddamn embarrassing to see all the empty lower bowl seats.
Secondly, I wasn't being serious about not letting suits in the building. Come on...
BTW, Pete, I've been to a pile of games in the ACC. And I tell you, the energy level isn't the same as it was in the old Gardens. I've been to a bunch of playoffs games... even a series clinching game... and the volume level never came close to the most recent Raptors playoff games. The last time the AAC rocked liked that was for the final two minutes of overtime during the Flyers/Leafs series a few years back after Tucker's bone crunching hit. It took the ACC over 60 minutes to finally wake up. LAME!
And "Who the hell says you can't dress up for a game?" I have no problem with dressing up as long as you watch the frigging game. I'm taking about the "suits." Those corporate stuck up jackasses who don't pay attention to the game. If you want to have a meeting... stay in your office.... don't hog the seats from the real fans. You'll be surprised that even though ticket prices are ludicrous... the real fans will pay good dough to attend a game. To them it's an honor to see their Leafs play… no matter what the price.
April 25, 2007 / 14:49
Pete - yeah, it unrealistic to ban the corporate types from the arena, and even to relegate them to the purples, as Erik suggested. They pay big bucks for those seats, and can do whatever the hell they want with them. BUT - to suggest they aren't in their seats because of washroom lineups is BS. I've been to plenty of games, and I've sat in the Platinums a number of times. It's the bar that's generally full, not the washrooms - and for a lot longer than 5 minutes into a period. For the most part, those guys are there to do business, not take in a hockey game.
April 25, 2007 / 16:05
More than the playoff run, you have touched on a very important fact that is changing our sport culture.
The corporate take-over of professional sport is decaying the core base of youth that are playing games we grew up fanatical about, namely hockey. Soccer is now the number one enrolled youth sport, and in a very short time basketball can become number two. Why....not only can parents not willingly afford to put their kids in hockey when they can afford these other sports, but if you can't get them to a game, how can they grow up loving the game, begging you to let them play like I did with my parents? My folks were English and Dutch, so hockey didn't mean squat to either of them, but in my heart, playing hockey made me a Canadian.
My son is a great example of this generation; all his buddies at school play soccer every day, when it came to put him in organized sports, guess what he wanted.
Finally Vancouver got the Giants, and going to a game became affordable (no, I have never been able to afford to take him to a Canucks game), and when we went, he loved it, he had a great time. When we got home, I gently asked again, "do you want to play hockey". Too late, he is happy with soccer.
I guess Freddie's article about a Swede Captain is not only going to become a reality, but it will become the norm as we rob our Canadian children of the joy of hockey.
I think the question is not with saving the professional game, but how can we recapture the game at the grassroots level?
Good luch with the Raptors. As for the NBA though, on the back of their playing cards do they give their rap sheet or gang affiliation. Sorry for the generalization, but man, between basketball and NFL football, give me a second rate juiced up Islander to bemuse anytime!
April 25, 2007 / 16:16
Pete, I can tell you the price of the Platinum playoff seats for last night's Raptor's game, because I delivered a pair to one of our corporate high performers: $291.00 for seats in row 6!
Anyway Erik, you'll be happy to know he took his pre-teen son to the game and they had a wonderful time. Best part: he wasn't wearing a suit.
April 25, 2007 / 18:18
Anyway you slice it, to get all excited about a Raptors playoff game attendance, you can't ignore the bandwagoning:
Year -- Totl A Avg A Record - Finish
2005-06 000000 000000 27 - 55 .329 4 (22 GB)
2004-05 000000 000000 33 - 49 .402 4 (12 GB)
2003-04 750608 18308 33 - 49 .402 6 (28 GB)
2002-03 777507 18964 24 - 58 .293 7 (26 GB)
2001-02 810160 19760 42 - 40 .512 3 (8 GB)
2000-01 793256 19348 47 - 35 .573 2 (5 GB)
1999-00 756496 18451 45 - 37 .549 3 (11 GB)
1998-99 439190 17568 23 - 27 .460 6 (10 GB)
1997-98 675255 16470 16 - 66 .195 8 (46 GB)
1996-97 748927 18267 30 - 52 .366 8 (39 GB)
1995-96 950330 23179 21 - 61 .256 8 (51 GB)
Performance is good, attendance is good. I couldn't find the stats for the Leafs quickly, but they can suck wind and the seats are sold.
Pam, regular season tix for Leafs vs the worst team in the league (arguably the Sens, but in reality say Philly) Platinums are $220ish. I haven't a clue what they are for a playoff game, but I would bet a beer that they are more than $290 a piece.
Erik, just because you like to sit in your seat for every micro second of the game (as do I btw), doesn't mean that someone else has to. They bought and paid for their tickets and if they want to sit on their hands, make deals or cheer for the opponent, last time I checked, that was their right.
My point is the Raptors fans are sitting their arses on the bandwagon, just like the FC fans will do and the Jays fans will do, but the Leafs will sell out night after night after night. Those are fans. The Leafs blew it this year, but I am still a Leaf fan, I wear my baseball cap with pride when my neighbour asks me what Mats Sundin is doing while he is watching the Sens play. Check out the Raptors attendance next year and see if it follows the chart above, play well, fans come, play poor fans go home and watch Bay Watch.
Just 'cause you cheer loud or sit in your seat early doesn't give you any right to buy tickets over someone else. If you want them. Go get them. They are available...

Island of Korcula has some very good beaches and here I’ll present to you some of them. First place take sandy beaches Vela Przina and Bilin Zal and on the second is pebble beach Pupnatska Luka. Those are the finest and the trendiest, some are much smaller and more sheltered beaches and are spread all over the beautiful island of Korcula.
