Toronto Mike had a posting about the Raptors yesterday, and referred to a conversation we had a few weeks ago.

The Raptors are basically a non-entity in Toronto. In Toronto they're treated much like NHL teams are treated in a lot of American markets. They have a small nucleus of fans that go to their games, but that's it.

The Raptors get 18 to 20 thousand fans to every game, but their television ratings are embarrassing and virtually nobody listens to their games on the radio. And let me ask you, when was the last time you went somewhere and got into a conversation about basketball?

I agree with Mike, it's odd that the Raptors have all but secured first place in the Atlantic Division and have already nailed down a playoff spot, yet all anybody wants to talk about is the Leafs and hockey.

That's just the way it is in Canada, and I'm not about to apologize for it. If anything, Americans should apologize for choosing basketball over hockey.

Gotta disagree with this..

Im in my mid 20s, I live downtown and I definitely sense a Raptor buzz in the city. A lot of people are talking about them..

Around my friends the Raptors are a much more frequent topic of discussion than the Maple Leafs are. Why wouldn't they be? They're an exciting, young team that looks like it's only going to get better for the forseeable future. Pretty different story for the Leafs.

There is certainly a huge core of unwavering Leaf fans in this city, but I do think the Raptors have scratched out a decent audience. (It's not impossible to do - the Blue Jays have managed to attract lots of fans over the years)

So, while your circle of friends may not care much for the Raptors, I think this may not reflect the feelings of the entire city.

I have to agree with James. I work for a big downtown company that has Raptor fans of every age - especially among the 20-somethings. I hear Raptor conversations all the time! We also have company Raptor tickets that a hot item for our clients.e ACC.

It comes down to this: Die-hard Leaf fans live in there own world: nothing else exists. And that's absolutely fine! Come to think about it, in Toronto there's an audience for opera, ballet and live theatre - it all depends on your environment.

Freddie, I'm thinking that one of the aims of this forum is to open our minds - all of us!!

Hey Fred,
I'm disagreeing too! I am a casual fan of the NBA. I am a huge Leaf fan. I am getting excited about the Raptors. Anybody who has attended a Raptors game, will get a new sense of how big and talented these athletes really are! Generally, I don't care about the overhyped NBA, but I like our hometown Fellas!!

Freddie....I think you're wrong on this one. Yes, the Leafs are at the top of everyone's mind and that is where a lot of the talk is....but there is a buzz about the Raptors. A lot of people are talking.
