Abu Hasan And Me - Part 2

March 30, 2007 @ 09:04

I spent a couple over very enjoyable hours with Abu Hasan on Wednesday night. And right off the top I have to explain that his name is Abu Hasan, not just Abu or just Hasan.

Abu Hasan means "father of Hasan". So by referring to him as just Abu like I did earlier in the week, I'm actually calling him "father of" and of course that doesn't make sense.

Abu Hasan is a 33 year old Canadian Muslim. He was born in Toronto and raised in Pickering before moving to Brampton about five years ago after being married. He's well educated and he develops software for a living. He's also concerned about the decaying image of Muslims around the world.

It would take page upon page to disclose everything we talked about on Wednesday night but his over riding concern and the reason he wanted to meet with me, was to explain that Muslims are peace loving people who are currently being blemished by a very small minority. A small minority that has chosen to interpret the faith in their own way to fit their own agendas and this simply isn't fair to those who follow Islam in the traditional way.

It's like anything else folks, we're all so easily influenced by what we see on television or read in the newspaper and we're quick to generalize and that can be a dangerous thing. Especially for people like Abu Hasan who doesn't drink and doesn't smoke, who prays five times a day, who loves his young family and who loves his religion.

He also loves the Leafs, the Jays, 102.1 The Edge and he especially loves his country.

Freddie - this is a great posting. I've been a long time fan, and read your blog every day and with this one you hit the nail on the head.

Abu Hasan seems like a good fella, and exactly like all the Muslims that I know ( and I know a few...)

Keep up the good work.

I am just another muslim fan of FreddieP, also was old fan of humble and fred show (late). This show got my attention due to funny Mr.Gooahead and then me and my wife became regular listner during morning drive to office. Frankly, I don't pray 5 times, mostly only morning before going to office, but the more I am learing about Islam the more I feel it is hijacked by a samll group of fundamentalists who are interpreting it differnet and wrong way.

My learning islam journy started only due to hate which I felt in media. Unfortunaltey, media only love and promote prblems in islam. For sure, islam helped me to become good father, husband, neighbour, employee and citizen and specially helping poors and elders etc. It also tells me those who are killing innocents (either by forece or by policies, I mean Osama/fundamentalist AND Bush/Blair, both) are not doing any good for humanity....both groups have power. Once group has poor-effected/hurted people's power and other goup has Army power......and it seems there is no end in near future.....unfortunately looks like chain reaction.
Anyhow, just hope for better and good....

Hey Tariq:

What kind of posting is this?

You're equating Bush and Blair with Osama Bin L.? I guess it turns out you're just another stereotypical muslim. I really hope there aren't many like you out there. Somehow I doubt it.

A recent CBC survey reported approx 15% of muslims living in Canada agreed with the intentions of the recent alleged Canadian terrorists' plot. But of course I'm sure you'll say it's just the anti-muslim Jew loving media. You guys are too much!!!

In Iraq it's muslims killing other muslims. You guys seem to be pretty good at that! The US and British armies are the police. Perhaps they should leave and let everyone just kill each other until there's not a person living in the country.

God bless.

Easy on the "you Guys" remarks, Argie.

Isn't that the whole point here ?

I think it may have flown
right over your head.

"you Guys" remarks tells me Argie's mentality. Clearly, you tried to destroy Freddie's little and nice effort to develop good environment.

Argie, who created that environment in Iraq? -USA-
Killer Sadaam was killing hundreds and now Bush score is in Thosands. Bush is winning, for sure....
Ha Ha good joke - Oil Thirsly USA is police? US is not police, objective was break up that nation to samll groups and then get oil resouces. Fire b/w two groups was result of USA plan and key reason to stay in Iraq. USA is supporting both groups underhand so that they keep fighting each other.

Did Iraqi nation request USA to come -NO-
Did they find WMD -No-
Did UN allowed USA to invade IRAQ -No-
Did USA follow UN request to not attach Iraq -No-

USA's habbit to interfear other countries during last 70 years changed world. Most of countries don't want USA to intefere in local politics.

Argie, read and improve you knowledge by reading polictical authors books (Visit Chapters regularly).

Friendship can solve problems, not war.

I would suggest Fred to ban religous topics and keep it ligt as Argie type of persons are still around who don't want friendships and give one more reason to Mulims.......

God bless.

Who would have thought those two words “you guys” would have caused so much hate and of course incorrect grammar and spelling.

The more I read from anti-America wankers like yourself the more I think Bush was right in invading Iraq. Muslim extremists must be stopped.

Thank God for America

How did Fred's posting about his meeting with Abu Hasan turn into a debate about the Americans in Iraq? I think Fred was only trying to build bridges and tear down some stereotypical walls. He had the opportunity to meet up with someone who was kind enough to share his beliefs and philosophies on life, culture and family....Good on you Fred for making the time for him and attempting to highlight his point of view to your readers. I don't think Fred's point had anything to do about politics but it had everything to do with humanity.

Kelly's absolutely correct, Argy, you're still missing the point.

The words “you guys” did not cause any hate, but, it did cause me to realize that you were still generalizing, sterotyping and assuming that one man's opinion was indicative and representative of an entire race.

That's exactly the issue that was being addressed here.

You might not agree with what Tariq expressed, but,
he wasn't necessarily speaking for anyone but himself.

I think we can all agree that Extremists must be stopped - whatever the race or religion.

I wish if I could delete my positng which have this type of outcome. It's not point of view but Argie's attitude which disappointed me. Just to end up this, all I can say, it was my mistake to post my feeling on this forum and will not do this mistake again.

I visit this site for getting some smile, not for tension. If someone hurt with my point of view, sorry for that.

Thanks and take care.

Disappointed Tariq.

I just have to state that I'm not missing Fred's point about not stereotyping and having tolerance for everyone. I think it was great that he met with Abu. I only had issue with Tariq's statements about Bush, Blair and the media. His comments were stereotypical and not useful. I only called him on these statements. To be attacked by some of the politically correct pansies on this blog was unjustified. No one else took Tariq's comments to task.

I don't believe muslims are a threat to our security but I do believe the survey I mentioned earlier that 15% of Cdn muslims might be.

If that's the case, Argie, you should have directed your counter specifically to the individual and dropped the "You Guys" reference.

Your point then would have been valid and fair.

It seems that was the only issue anyone had and I don't think this observation was
limited to the politically correct pansies out there.

That specific term just stood out there glaring and open for comment. I'm not surprised that someone picked up on it - I sure did when I read your initial post.

It was perfectly fine to call him on his statements, even his grammar if you felt it necessary, but how ironic to suggest that his views were representative of all those who shared his religion ( I assume that's what you meant by "You Guys", unless your use of the term was directed at all people with beards or something) within context of a story about how unfair it is to do just that to the
85 % of Canadians affected by this issue.

These comments are not about being politically correct.

They are about showing empathy, understanding the point and thinking before you type.

Hi Redneck Ron,

Thanks for your comments. I understand this is an emotional issue for many people. To the aforementioned 85%, I apologize. The article below covers pretty much why there is a concern for the remaining 15% in this country:

I read the article on websites before I leave a short review. If I have got not a thing to say of the write-up topic, I do not have to leave any critical reviews. And I want to read anyone else’s feedback on that post also. Because I can find advantageous ideas in the solid comments. I would have posted “Notable blog! Awesome posts!” then I may be spamming your blog. I also possess blogging site, one thing I'd personally do day-to-day after i signed onto my blogs is read responses to my stuff and physically approve or reject these reviews. Keywordluv as well as brings you more commenters. It improves your position in search engines since you’re not merely on a multitude of “dofollow blog lists” but additionally on a handful of those “keywordluv lists”. Many thanks, Valerie
